South Chicago Dance Theatre
debuts major commissions and collaborations in jam-packed 2022-23 season
Among highlights are World Premieres for Music of the Baroque and Giordano Dance Chicago; plus, on-the-rise company makes Auditorium Theatre debut with evening-length work Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley by Executive Artistic Director Kia S. Smith
(August 10, 2022) South Chicago Dance Theatre, a dynamic multicultural organization that fuses classical and contemporary dance styles, proudly announces its jam-packed 2022-23 performance season featuring multiple commissions by, and collaborations with, some of Chicago’s most prominent arts organizations. Among season highlights are expected to be:
- The company’s first collaboration with Music of the Baroque, one of the leading ensembles in the country devoted to the performance of eighteenth-century works. Its Baroque Heroes program in October opens with Praetorius’s Dances from the Terpsichore, featuring world-premiere choreography by South Chicago Dance Theatre Executive Artistic Director Kia Smith.
- Following, in March 2023, marks the world premiere of a new work by Smith commissioned by Giordano Dance Chicago (GDC) and featuring artists from both dance companies. This dual company work is the first collaboration of its kind in GDC’s 60-year history of creating and presenting innovative jazz dance choreography. The piece will honor Homer Hans Bryant for his lifetime of contributions to the dance world locally and globally.
- Finally, culminating its season in dramatic fashion, South Chicago Dance Theatre will make its debut at the Auditorium Theatre in June 2023 with the World Premiere of Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley, an evening length work celebrating the legacy of renowned saxophonist Jimmy Ellis, the father of Kia S. Smith.
“Following a 5th Anniversary season of exciting growth – including our Choreographic Diplomacy™ tour to the Netherlands, premiering five new commissions at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, expanding our education programs to 16 school partners, and receiving a “Foster Innovation” Award from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events – South Chicago Dance Theatre’s sixth season is turning out to be even more productive! In addition to the growth of my company, I am personally honored to be entrusted by cultural leaders such as Nan Giordano (Giordano Dance Chicago artistic director) and Declan McGovern (Music of the Baroque executive director) for the opportunities to create new works that will enable SCDT to reach even greater audiences. Season six feels like a dream!” said Smith.
In addition to the aforementioned premieres to be created for South Chicago Dance Theatre and Giordano Dance Chicago, Smith, herself, has been in demand as an independent choreographer, with other commissions in the coming year to include University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, August 2022; Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company, September 2022; Houston Contemporary Dance Company, December 2022; and Western Michigan University, March 2023.

SOUTH CHICAGO DANCE THEATRE ANNOUNCES
FIFTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
Five Commissioned Premieres for Harris Theater Debut,
South Chicago Dance Festival and More
The South Chicago Dance Theatre (SCDT), which seamlessly fuses classical and contemporary dance styles while preserving historic dance work, announces its Fifth Anniversary Season. Highlights include the company’s premiere at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance featuring five world-premiere commissions, the third annual South Chicago Dance Festival and national and international collaborations.
Professional Company Premieres and Performances
Throughout the season, SCDT has commissioned several accomplished choreographers to create new works for the company’s Harris Theater debut, “An Evening with the South Chicago Dance Theatre: A Gold Affair” Friday, May 20, 2022. The choreographers include SCDT Founder and Executive Artistic Director Kia S. Smith and guests Ron De Jesus, longtime Chicago dancer and choreographer; Stephanie Martinez, founder and artistic director of PARA.MAR Dance Theatre; Crystal Michelle Perkins, associate artistic director of Dayton Contemporary Dance Company; and Wade Schaaf, founder and artistic director of Chicago Repertory Ballet.
“These choreographers come from different backgrounds and will provide us with a widely diverse collection of works for our Harris Theater season,” Smith said.
In August, SCDT participates in several important industry events: performing in person in Dance for Life, Chicago Dancers United’s annual fundraiser for the Chicago dance community August 26 in Millennium Park and virtually in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Smith is one of eight choreographers participating in the Jacob’s Pillow’s Ann and Weston Hicks Emerging Choreographer Fellowship in August, and the company performs in the Harvest Contemporary Dance Festival in October at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts.
In November, SCDT presents its third annual South Chicago Dance Festival November 1–13, featuring professional and student dance companies from Chicago’s South Side, and, through the company’s Choreographic Diplomacy initiative, welcoming Choomna Dance Company, directed by Joseph Kim, from Seoul, South Korea, in the fourth year of an ongoing partnership. Choomna will join SCDT in offering masterclasses, workshops and performances at high schools and community organizations. The festival culminates in a mainstage performance Friday, November 12 at Mandel Hall on the University of Chicago campus. As part of the partnership with Choomna, SCDT’s professional company tours to South Korea January 10–16.
“Our Choreographic Diplomacy initiative uses the art of dance-making to build a more connected, equitable and empathetic world,” Smith explained. “We’re not only creating and presenting new work across geographic boundaries, but building long-term friendships among the artists, students and audiences who participate in this program.”
During Black History Month in February, SCDT returns to the Chicago Public Schools to offer interactive lecture/demonstrations that educate students about Chicago’s Black Arts Movement.
Education Programs
SCDT continues its Education and Community Programs with eight school partners, offering a variety of ongoing classes for students in Chicago’s public and surrounding school districts. Through a grant from the Arts Work Fund, the company is incorporating a new trauma-informed pedagogical approach to implementing its educational programming.
Community Partnerships
SCDT’s potential for growth and evolution has led to important relationships with several key community partners:
- The City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has given SCDT a Foster Innovation Award in celebration of the company’s fifth anniversary season.
- The International Association of Blacks in Dance has selected SCDT to be part of the 2021–24 cohort of its COHI |MOVE (Comprehensive Organizational Health Initiative | Managing Organizational Vitality and Endurance) Collective.
- Allies for Community Business has chosen SCDT to be part of the 2022 cohort for its Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Lab.
